Tinubu Approves Salary Boost for Nigeria’s Armed Forces

President Bola Tinubu has approved a significant salary increase for Nigeria’s armed forces personnel, effective September 1, 2026. 

The move is part of his administration’s broader effort to improve welfare, morale, and operational efficiency within the military.  

Pay will rise between 30% and 80%, depending on rank and cadre.  

About 250,000 officers and men across the Army, Navy, and Air Force will benefit.  

The annual wage bill climbs from ₦660bn to ₦924bn, reflecting the new pay structure.  

Tinubu emphasized that improved welfare is essential for operational readiness and national security.  

Higher pay is expected to reduce attrition and attract skilled recruits.  

The decision comes amid ongoing challenges with insurgency, banditry, and cyber threats.  

Military personnel welcomed the move, calling it overdue recognition of their sacrifices.  

Economists warn the increase could strain Nigeria’s budget unless matched by revenue growth.  

Civil servants and police unions argue they too deserve similar adjustments.  

Tinubu’s approval of a 30–80% salary boost for the armed forces marks one of the largest welfare interventions in Nigeria’s military history. 

While it promises to strengthen morale and security capacity, questions remain about fiscal sustainability and whether other sectors will demand comparable treatment.
