Kebbi Governor Nasir Idris Replaces Deputy Umar Abubakar Tafida Arugungu with Ibrahim Muhammad Augie as 2027 Running Mate

Governor Nasir Idris of Kebbi State has announced a major shake‑up in his political team ahead of the 2027 elections, dropping his deputy, Umar Abubakar Tafida Arugungu, as running mate and replacing him with Ibrahim Muhammad Augie. 

The decision, which has sparked intense debate in Kebbi’s political circles, was reportedly based on legal advice regarding Tafida’s eligibility.  

Speaking at a press briefing in Birnin Kebbi, Governor Idris explained that the move was necessary to ensure compliance with electoral laws and to strengthen his ticket ahead of the polls. “This decision was not taken lightly. 

It is guided by legal counsel and the need to present a credible, lawful, and united front to the people of Kebbi,” Idris stated.  

Sources close to the governor revealed that Tafida’s eligibility had been questioned due to unresolved legal issues, though details remain unclear. 

Political analysts suggest that the governor acted preemptively to avoid potential disqualification or litigation that could undermine his campaign.  

Ibrahim Muhammad Augie, a seasoned politician and respected community leader, is expected to bring fresh energy to Idris’s campaign. 

Augie has previously served in various administrative roles and is known for his grassroots connections in Kebbi. His selection is seen as a strategic move to consolidate support across diverse constituencies.  

The announcement has triggered mixed reactions.  

Supporters of Governor Idris praised the decision as a bold step to safeguard the campaign’s credibility.  

While, critics, however, accused the governor of sidelining Tafida unfairly, arguing that the move could fracture internal party unity.  

Tafida himself, on the other hand, has yet to issue a formal statement, though sources close to him described the decision as “unexpected and disappointing.”  

The shake‑up underscores the high stakes of the 2027 elections, where Kebbi State is expected to play a pivotal role in shaping national outcomes. 

Idris’s decision may strengthen his ticket legally, but it also risks alienating loyal supporters of Tafida.  

Political analyst Dr. Amina Yusuf observed: “This is a calculated risk. While Augie’s inclusion may broaden Idris’s appeal, the sudden removal of a sitting deputy could create internal tensions that the opposition might exploit.”  

Governor Idris’s move comes amid heightened political maneuvering across Nigeria, with parties reshuffling alliances and candidates ahead of 2027. In Osun State, Accord Party’s Ademola Adeleke recently secured victory in the governorship election, signaling voter appetite for change. Nationally, Atiku Abubakar has declared his intention to contest again, while President Tinubu faces scrutiny over economic reforms.  

As Kebbi prepares for the 2027 elections, all eyes will be on how Idris manages the fallout from his decision. The success of his campaign may depend on whether he can unite his party behind Augie and reassure voters that the change was made in their best interest.  

For now, the governor’s bold reshuffle has added fresh intrigue to Nigeria’s evolving political landscape.
