The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has declared Governor Ademola Adeleke of the Accord Party winner of the Osun State governorship election, securing a decisive victory over his closest rival, Bola Oyebamiji of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
According to official figures released by INEC, Adeleke polled 511,067 votes, winning in 19 local government areas. Oyebamiji of the APC garnered 444,815 votes, securing 11 LGAs. The African Democratic Congress (ADC) candidate, Najeem Salaam, finished third with 72,000 votes.
The announcement was made at the Osogbo collation center, where INEC officials emphasized that the process was conducted transparently and in line with electoral guidelines.
The victory sparked immediate reactions across Nigeria’s political spectrum.
Peter Obi, Labour Party leader, congratulated Adeleke, describing the win as proof that “when people stand, democracy wins.”
On the other hand, The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) hailed the result as a direct message to President Tinubu and the APC ahead of the 2027 general elections.
President Bola Tinubu himself congratulated Adeleke, calling the outcome “a fitting assurance that democracy will flourish in Nigeria.”
Civil society groups also praised the peaceful conduct of the election, though they noted isolated incidents of violence and intimidation in some polling units.
Adeleke’s campaign focused heavily on grassroots mobilization, promising improved infrastructure, education, and healthcare for Osun residents. His message of inclusivity and accountability resonated strongly with voters, particularly in rural communities.
Oyebamiji’s campaign, backed by the APC machinery, emphasized continuity and economic reforms. However, analysts suggest that voter dissatisfaction with national economic challenges may have weakened APC’s appeal in Osun.
The Osun election is widely seen as a bellwether for Nigeria’s political climate ahead of the 2027 general elections. Adeleke’s victory not only strengthens Accord Party’s position but also signals growing voter appetite for alternatives beyond the traditional APC–PDP rivalry.
Political analyst Dr. Amina Yusuf observed: “This result shows that Nigerians are willing to reward leaders who connect directly with the people. It also underscores the importance of grassroots politics in shaping electoral outcomes.”
Despite the victory, Adeleke faces significant challenges in delivering on his campaign promises. Osun State continues to grapple with unemployment, poor infrastructure, and rising insecurity. Analysts warn that failure to address these issues could erode public trust before the next election cycle.
The election outcome has reignited debates about Nigeria’s democratic resilience. While INEC’s conduct was praised, opposition parties continue to call for reforms to strengthen electoral transparency and reduce judicial interference in political disputes.
For Adeleke, the victory cements his reputation as a populist leader with strong grassroots appeal. For the APC, the loss serves as a reminder of the need to reconnect with voters ahead of 2027.
