INSIGHTS FROM A TOXICOLOGIST'S INTERVIEW ON SNAKE SAFETY

Recently, a toxicologist who runs a snake farm housing four million, seven hundred thousands snakes in Nasarawa State, Nigeria shared some crucial information on a local radio show. Here are his key points on what attracts snakes to homes and how to handle snake bites:

Attractants for Snakes:
1. Eggshells: Can draw snakes from up to 15 kilometers away.
2. Chickens
3. Rats
4. Frogs
5. Anything they can swallow

Important Safety Tips:
- All Snakes are Poisonous Except Pythons: While pythons are non-venomous, other snakes vary in the potency and speed of their venom's effects, he said.
- Bandages/Tourniquets: Using these can cause swelling and paralysis in the bitten area.
- Avoid Trekking After a Bite: Movement increases venom circulation, potentially leading to death.
- Cold Water: Drinking cold water can help slow the poison's spread.
- Stay Calm: Reduce movement to slow venom circulation.
- Pawpaw Leaves: Chewing and swallowing the liquid can halt venom spread until medical help is received.
- If a snake spits its deadly venom into the eye, it can be treated if the victim seeks help on time.
- When venom enters the Nose: This can be fatal within minutes if not treated urgently.

A Warning About Wall Geckos:
- Deadlier than Snakes: If a gecko licks a toothbrush and someone uses it without cleaning, it could be fatal.
- Cover Your Food: Their droppings are highly dangerous, so always cover pots and water containers.
