India’s Supreme Court Upholds Caste Census

India’s Supreme Court has dismissed a petition challenging the inclusion of caste enumeration in the national census.

The ruling, delivered on May 19, 2026, emphasized that census methodology is a policy matter under the government’s discretion, not a judicial issue.

The decision clears the way for the Indian government to proceed with caste‑based data collection, a move expected to influence resource allocation, affirmative action policies, and political representation.

Supporters argue that caste enumeration will provide a clearer picture of social inequalities, enabling targeted welfare programs. Critics, however, warn that it could deepen divisions and fuel identity politics.

This ruling comes amid heightened debate over social justice and economic equity in India, with political parties already positioning themselves to leverage the data in upcoming elections.
