Politics: Senate Debates Electoral Reform Bill

Nigeria’s Senate has begun debate on a landmark Electoral Reform Bill designed to strengthen transparency ahead of the 2027 general elections. 


The bill proposes biometric voter verification, stricter campaign finance regulations, and enhanced monitoring of electronic voting systems.  


Supporters argue the reforms will curb electoral malpractice and restore public confidence in Nigeria’s democratic process. 


Critics, however, warn of logistical challenges, including the cost of biometric infrastructure and the risk of disenfranchising rural voters.  


The debate signals Nigeria’s determination to address long‑standing concerns about election credibility, but the outcome will depend on whether lawmakers can balance reform with practical implementation.
