Lagos NGO Launches Literacy Drive “Books for Tomorrow”
A Lagos‑based nonprofit has unveiled a bold literacy campaign titled “Books for Tomorrow”, aiming to distribute 50,000 books across public schools in 10 districts. The initiative seeks to tackle Nigeria’s persistent challenges with reading culture and access to educational materials.
The Campaign
The program, backed by local authors and publishers, will run throughout 2026. Volunteers are mobilizing to deliver books directly to classrooms, focusing on schools where resources are scarce. Organizers say the campaign is designed not only to provide materials but also to inspire a love of reading among young learners.
Voices from the Community
Volunteer coordinator Funke Adeyemi explained: “We believe every child deserves access to books that inspire and educate. This campaign is about giving children the tools to dream bigger.”
Teachers across Lagos welcomed the initiative, noting that many classrooms lack adequate textbooks and storybooks. One primary school teacher in Surulere remarked that the program could “transform how children engage with learning.”
Wider Impact
Beyond Lagos, the NGO plans to expand into rural communities, where literacy rates are lower and access to books is even more limited. The campaign hopes to spark similar grassroots efforts nationwide, creating a ripple effect in Nigeria’s education sector.
The “Books for Tomorrow” campaign represents a powerful step toward bridging educational gaps and empowering the next generation. By placing books in the hands of children, the initiative underscores the belief that literacy is the foundation of opportunity.
